At the place of today's Parish Church there once stood the oldest church of Klagenfurt. It was dedicated to Saint Mary and was mentioned for the first time in an official document in the year 1255. Klagenfurt Parish Church is home to the oldest cemetery in the city (used until 1677). After the church had been destroyed by fires and the earthquake of 1692, Johann Friedrich Orsini-Rosenberg laid the founding stone for the new church. Viennese architect Friedrich Santner designed a plain facade; today the outer walls of the church are decorated with numerous tombstones.

The town parish church is famous for its marvelous painted vaulted ceilings, including a ceiling fresco by the most famous painter of the Carinthian Baroque, Josef Ferdinand Fromiller. Also on view are works by Josef Mölckh, Josef Anton Cusetti, Egon Rubin and Ernst Fuchs. The steeple of the parish church features a 50 m-high viewing platform, from which visitors can enjoy beautiful panoramas of Klagenfurt’s historical district as well as the surrounding area.
