As early as the Ice Age, hunters stalked mammoths from here, which is why the area can look back on a long history of settlement.

In August 1908, the oldest woman in Austria, the "Venus of Willendorf ’, was found. The Venus - a perfectly preserved statuette carved out of limestone, only 11 cm high, depicting an unclothed ‘woman’ - is probably one of the most important archaeological finds in the world. After all, the lady, a prehistoric fruit labour symbol, is a proud 29,500 years old.

The new Stone Age Museum ‘Venusium ’ provides a glimpse into times long past, when even the ancient inhabitants of this corner of the world, blessed with incredible beauty, spent their lives in the hills of the Wachau.

The village was established as a market town in 1447. A late Romanesque pillar basilica and the baroque vicarage designed by Prandtauer, which has just been lovingly restored, are just two of the gems of this dreamy little corner of the world.

An inn, a café-pub, a wine tavern, marked hiking trails, the Danube cycle path, fishing opportunities in one of the last free-flowing stretches of the Danube, a beach volleyball court and a natural beach invite you to linger.

The "Original Wachau apricot ’ can be found here in abundance, in all its forms, whether in its natural state, as a dessert or in concentrated form.
